Schmidt (Jack Nicholson) finds himself very much adrift after his retirement and the sudden death of his wife. He finds a sort of therapy when he enrolls in a child sponsorship program he sees on late night television and begins to dictate in letters the story of his life to an African boy. He eventually leaves the house setting out in his Winnebago, visiting his past, and writing letters along the way. Schmidt begrudgingly attends his daughter's wedding before returning home. He returns home feeling defeated, before discovering a surprising piece of correspondence waiting in the mail.
