The movie chronicles the life of Glenn Holland (Richard Dreyfus), whose life is driven by his love of music. In spite of himself, he takes a job as a music teacher at a local high school. At first he is nothing but frustrated with the students’ lack of skill and/or interest in music. Gradually he learns to teach the fun in music and really reaches his students. He finds fulfillment in transmitting his love of music to others. Glen writes music at home and spends a lot of time with his students, neglecting his family. Eventually, budget cuts force the school to discontinue the music program. As a final goodbye, the alumni students Glenn has touched over the years gather to play the great opus he has been writing all his life, and Glenn makes amends for his strained relationship with his son.
