Sonny (Robert Duvall), a penticostal minister in Texas, is in a rocky marriage with Jessie ( Farrah Fawcet). His wife begins to see another man and Sonny is consumed by his anger and begins to spiral out of control. After attacking Jessie's new boyfriend with a baseball bat and beating him badly, he flees Texas and heads to Louisianna where he baptises himself and takes on the alias of The Apostle EF. He meets a retired minister and starts a new church. He becomes successful, attracting a multiracial congregation, converts a racist (Billy Bob Thorton), and begins to preach on the radio. The Texas authorities are tipped off by Jessie and come to arrest him. He is preaching when they arrive, a sermon about redemption.
